They wanted me to work in a factory. They said I was only a Pole, y. after all, but they hadn't talked when I was home, and could still have gone over to the English." "So!" "I told them I was an actress. Then they said that before I could act in the Eeflin State Theater I would have to prove my loyalty. They made me come to Norway." "But what do you want me to do about it?" She stopped, looking up at him with wide and pleading eyes.

"Please don't say no to me. I thought since were here, were pretending be a high you, officer maybe you could talk to the captain and get him to send me back." Gently he put her hands away, got up, and went to the window. The clearing lay warm and midmorning sunlight. Here and there beneath the trees a few red and yellow leaves slid sideways down like small ships. "What a fool I am," he thought.

"Here I stand talking to her, and God knows what's going on down in the village." He looked back at the girl, and was surprised to find how much the sight of her affected him. "So you are afraid," he said. "Why?" "I don't know." "Have the soldiers been unkind to you?" "No." "Is it my coming that made you afraid?" "Oh, please stop asking me." She came up behind him and clasped him about the shoulders, pressing her cheek to the back of his coat. "I'm so lonely," she cried. "I hate them.

I can't stand being with them any longer. You must help me." "You will have to help yourself." At last he turned. He saw her still, that small girl riding in the park, in the beautiful Lazienki Gardens, with an officer beside her. "I know your trouble," he said. "It is a bad conscience.

Do you want the to tell you the truth? CHAPTER XIII DON'T know what to do," she cried suddenly. "They REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS Recorded Dec. 4, 1942. Deed: Annie Barry Quinn Chris McCoy and Ethel McCoy, wife, jt. Nov.

The Germans you loved so much have made a fool of you." The tears started to her eyes. A pity woke in him for her weakness and unhappiness, and a pain for those warm, dead days when schoolmasters sat at their desks, and rode in the Lazienki Gardens. She mistook his silence, lifted her head slowly, and began to smile with a new bitterness about her mouth. "I could do it so she said. "Only one word.

That's all I would need. Oh, yes, you think you can treat me as you please. You think. "What would you gain?" She saw that his eyes were mocking her. "I could go down to the captain," she said in a louder voice.

"Oh, my poor Englishman. My poor, crazy Englishman." "Katja." His eyes grew hard and narrow, and he strode forward and took her by the wrist. She cried out in surprise at, the pain of his grip. "You fool," he said, "you could help us all, instead of talking such chatter." "You think so," she cried fiercely. "But it's too late." "You wanted me to tell you what to do." She straightened up.

"Let me go. I don't need your advice." He dropped his hand, and she started toward the door. RUCK turned to the window. attention was caught by the sight of an old man climbing wearily up the path from town. Dressed meticulously in black, even to his flat-crowned hat and bow tie, and with his small beard neatly trimmed, he came striding slowly, with a sort of old-fashioned dignity, across the clearing.

He carried a walking stick crooked over his right arm. The soldiers must have seen him about the same time, for they started making good-humored: remarks about him as soon as he came within earshot. Ruck heard them shouting, "Ho, ho, the schoolmaster. Boys, have you studied your history? Look at that cane. He'll beat you if you don't know your lesson." The old man paid them no attention, but came slowly to the steps, "Good morning," he said.

"My name is Andresen. Sixtus the There corner were of his little lips as if he were laughing inside self. They slapped each other on the back and sprang to mock attention. One of them co*cked his cap rakishly and spat onto the steps. "Would you be SO kind as to tell me if your commanding officer is here?" "To be sure," said one, rolling his eyes skyward.

"To be And he started to bow, but at that moment, catching sight of the old man's face, stern, and yet full of quiet pride, his bow became awkward, as if before he finished he intended to become serious. Sixtus Andresen started forward, but a burly trooper sitting on the porch landing crossed his long, booted legs in front of him, blocking the steps. "Would you be so kind," said Sixtus, and tapped man's boots with his stick. The soldier started to laugh, but then he realized that the old man was staring at him strangely. "Well, what's wrong?" he asked.

"Nothing. Nothing," Sixtus said slowly, "but your ancestors were Slavs, were they not?" The soldier flushed angrily and scrambled up. "What do you mean by that?" he burst out. What makes you say "High, receding forehead and flat-topped skull," Sixtus, answered, repeating every word distinctly. "Next time you look in the mirror, you will find you are a bit different from your comrades." And with that, and a little nod to either side, he stepped past and vanished into the hotel.

THE Polish girl lay on her bed, staring with wide and frightened eyes at the ceiling. She had been crying. But now everything was still. Katja was wavering between two choices. One was to help the people in the village as Ruck had asked her to do.

But that would take courage. The other was to lead her own life and try to get back to what she had always wanted. That second choice, so much the easier, had been strengthened by the ever recurring hope that they would send her back to the continent. She had come slowly to believe that it was really true, that there was no hope. And discovering at the same time that there was no real life for her in joining a fight of which she knew she could never be a part, she realized there was only one path 1 left.

Katja knew suddenly what she must do. It would not be hard to steal a pistol from a soldier's room. (To Be Continued) U. S. CENSORSHIP CHAIRMAN HORIZONTAL Answer to Previous Puzzle 10 Substitution.
