Summer is a slow season for music (and, you know, life) in Austin. As we round the corner on September and look forward to what we hope are cooler days ahead, concert season is heating up. From massive tours featuring chart-topping stars at the Moody Center, to smaller club shows where you can get up close and personal with tomorrow's big thing, here's a look at touring acts and big shows coming to Austin this fall.

Sept. 3

Jonas Brothers at Moody Center

The Jonas Brothers, aka the Jo Bros aka one of our favorite boy bands to exist, is bringing their “Jonas Brothers: FIVE ALBUMS. ONE NIGHT.” tour to Austin and we will be there. The trio is made up of brothers Kevin, Joe and Nick. You might remember them, their purity rings and hits like “Burnin’ Up” and “S.O.S.” from the early aughts, or maybe you’re like me and saw them at the State Fair of Texas in 2007. (Isn’t that so crazy? Seeing the Jo Bros and then grabbing a corn dog on a day off from junior high school feels like a fever dream.) The brothers are all married dads now and we can’t wait to see them at the Moody Center. $90 and up. A second show has been added on Oct. 22. moodycenteratx.comKelsey Bradshaw

Major League DJz at Concourse Project patio

The term amapiano loosely translates to “the pianos” in the South African Zulu language. Over the last few years, the jazzy hybrid of deep house, hip-hop, traditional sounds and lounge music has been shaking down dancefloors around the globe. Twin brothers Banele and Bandile Mbere of Johannesburg — who shot to international stardom with their 2020 lockdown Balcony Mix video series — have emerged as the genre’s leading ambassadors. Last year, the duo was the first amapiano group booked to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and this gig is sandwiched between a run of West Coast festivals. $20 and up. concourseproject.com

Drake at Moody Center

Real talk: live Drake is the best Drake. Oozing charisma and megawatt stage presence, Aubrey Graham masterfully captivates massive crowds. Last year, he logged two releases, the solidly summery dance platter “Honestly, Nevermind” and “Her Loss,” a collab with 21 Savage. The Atlanta rapper joins Drizzy on this tour and songs from both albums will surface on the setlist. But Drake knows what you came for. Your favorite petty jabs and indulgent odes to being misunderstood delivered in that sing-song flow that reshaped a genre will also be in the mix. $374 and up. moodycenteratx.com

According to NPR’s Living Legends series, with 2,200 titles to his name, the Detroit-area native holds the Guinness World Records title for most-recorded jazz bassist in history. Carter has been a vital force in the world of jazz., from the beginnings of his career playing with Miles Davis and Herbie Hanco*ck in the ‘60s, to the ‘80s and ‘90s when he became the go-to low-end man for hip-hop samples, to the 2021 Grammys when his album “Skyline” took home the trophy for best jazz instrumental album. $20 and up. austintheatre.org

Lana del Rey at Germania Insurance Amphitheater

On her latest album, "Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd," the long-reigning queen of "Summertime Sadness" elevates her brand. She wraps her trademark austere loneliness in gospel chord progressions ("Sweet") or jazzy piano from Jon Batiste ("Candy Necklace"). She bares scars, exposes insecurities and takes us to (weird celebrity) church. In the process, she produces a collection that even the haters (me) have to respect. Technically sold out. germaniaamp.com.

Reneé Rapp at Stubb’s

Reneé Rapp, who you know as Leighton on HBO Max’s “Sex Lives of College Girls” and as Regina George in the musical “Mean Girls,” is bringing her “Snow Hard Feelings” tour to Austin on Sept. 18 to Stubb’s. Rapp released her debut studio album, “Snow Angel,” in August. Rapp’s voice, both in her pop music and on Broadway, is incredible. She’s a force to be reckoned with and we don’t doubt she’ll return to Austin in the coming years to perform at a bigger venue. $137 VIP tickets available. stubbsaustin.com. — K.B.

Jelly Roll at Germania Insurance Amphitheater

The former rapper from Nashville was the breakout star at the first Austin-hosted CMT Awards in March. He racked up three wins and, lifted by a full gospel choir, he stole the show with a soaring rendition of “Need A Prayer.” The song, like much of his catalog, grapples with his flaws in a way that is deeply relatable. “We're getting to see a man practice growth and gratitude in real time,” the 38-year-old said after the show. “We're talking about a completely rehabilitated criminal. … We're talking about battling demons, addiction, struggling, you know. We're coming from a middle lower class America. Man, we're representing the real slice of America here. This is the real (expletive).” $29 and up. germaniaamp.com

TV Girl at Emo’s

The California dreamy indie pop outfit originally made a mark with the lilting “Lover’s Rock” off their 2014 album “French Exit.” But the group got a big boost when TikTokers discovered the 2016 ‘horny poet” ode to unrequited hook ups, “Not Allowed.” The video has been trending on the video-sharing app for the last couple years, as creators seize different lyrics to feature. Earlier this year, the group released their latest album, “Grapes Upon the Vine,” a departure from earlier work that laces organic gospel sounds into the pop earworms. Oct. 6-14: ACL Fest late shows

Looking for an ACL Fest experience that's à la carte? If your ACL dreams don't involve standing in Zilker Park with the masses you might be able to catch your favorite artist at one of this year's after shows.

El Paso dream pop outfit Cigarettes After Sex (Oct. 9) and folk rockers Mt. Joy (Oct. 10) are both booked for big concerts at Waterloo Park. Australian blues rocker Tash Sultana (Oct. 6), recently reunited indie rockers the Walkmen (Oct. 7), Japanese/British dance floor banger Rina Sawayama (Oct. 11) and '90s faves the Breeders (Oct. 13) are among the artists who will play Stubb's BBQ.

For a somewhat smaller show experience, you can catch avant garde rockers Yves Tumor at Scoot Inn (Oct. 7). Also, don't sleep on French producer and multi-instrumentalist FKJ (Oct. 11) or Canadian folksters Tegan and Sara (Oct. 12) at Emo's. Groove with Belgian electro pop duo Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul at 3Ten (Oct. 7) or chill wave duo Poolside, who will log a DJ set at Superstition (Oct. 7).

If you're looking for a truly intimate experience with a big name ACL Fest act, try to snag tickets for a solo set from Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflet at Antone's (Oct. 6).

Janelle Monae at Waterloo Park

With a commanding presence that belies her tiny frame, Janelle Monae has been one of the most powerful performers on the planet since the early '10s when she was exploring her android alter ego and wearing suits to honor her working class parents, who labored in uniforms. Over the past decade, Monae's relationship with her human self has grown deeper. She came out as queer, pansexual and non-binary, donned a pair of vagin*l "Pynk" pants and her artistry blossomed. Her 2018 Austin City Limits Music Festival sets had a theme of radiant positivity in the face of adversity and she left her audiences lifted. On her latest album, "Age of Pleasure," Monae lavishes in the truest version of herself. She no longer walks, she floats, and she invites her listeners to join her in the clouds. “I want to talk to my community, the LGBTQIA+ community. I love you so much," she told an audience at Outside Lands in San Francisco last month. "To be Black, to be queer, to be non-binary, to evolve and to have family like you, is a blessing.”

Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real at ACL Live

Of the many beautiful moments that marked Willie Nelson's 90th birthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl, there was none more haunting than the younger Nelson's performance of his father's classic "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground." As he inhabited his father's high lonesome tones on the chorus — “So leave me if you need to, I will still remember” — we gazed into the great beyond with heartbreaking clarity and dabbed our eyes at the reminder: At the end of every life comes a time to let go. Nelson and his band are touring to support their recently released album "Sticks & Stones." $35 and up. acllive.com.

ACL Hall of Fame tribute to Trisha Yearwood and John Prine

Austin's signature television series is in the process of taping artists for its 49th season. As the show ticks closer and closer to its half-century mark, it is the longest-running music television program in history. In 2014, "ACL" producers created the Hall of Fame to honor artists who have left an indelible mark on the show. This year's honorees are singer-songwriters Trisha Yearwood and the late John Prine. Yearwood taped the show twice, in 1996 and 2000. She also appeared with Don Henley in 2015. Prine, who died of COVID-19 complications in 2020, was a masterful writer whose songs were inhabited by well-drawn characters with simple stories that revealed universal truths. The trajectory of his career is recorded through nine "ACL" appearances. Performing artists have yet to be announced, but it's safe to expect notable pop ups from musical luminaries. $54 and up. acllive.com

Genesis Owusu at Empire Garage

Set against the backdrop of a violent storm about to break, Owusu’s 2023 South by Southwest Music Festival showcase had an unforgettable edge of danger. The Ghanaian Australian hit the stage flanked by a squadron of masked dancers clad in emergency red, heavy black cords hanging around their chests. The energy level that began at 11 ratcheted up and up as he machine-gun rapped, flexed his Michael Jackson falsetto, cranked dat Soulja Boy and executed a slow-motion trust fall over the crowd in one of the most explosive sets of the week. $22. empireatx.com.

Luis Miguel at Moody Center

The golden-voiced Latin pop superstar returns to Austin for the first time in a decade. The singer dubbed El Sol de México has played everything from mariachi to jazz and pop, but is perhaps most beloved for his “Romance” albums that reinvent the balladry of classic bolero music for modern audiences. In 2018, Netflix released a docudrama, “Luis Miguel,” that traces the singer’s sometimes tumultuous life and career, including the enduring wound from the mysterious disappearance of his mother, Marcela Basteri. This concert is one of several Texas dates. Other stops include Hidalgo (Oct. 28), Dallas (Oct. 29), Houston (Nov. 2) and San Antonio (Nov. 4). If you missed out on tickets to this show, he’ll be back at the Moody Center for Cinco de Mayo on May 5. Resale tickets start at $278. (Tickets to May 5 show start at $84.) moodycenteratx.com

Wynonna Judd at ACL Live

On her "Back to Wy" tour, the country music queen turns the clock back 30 years to the dawn of her solo career. She will play songs from her self-titled 1992 debut and her 1993 follow up, "Tell Me Why," back-to-back in album order. She'll also throw in other hits and Judds' classics as a finale. "As I sit and listen to these two records, I’m flooded with the memories that surrounded that time in my life," Judd said in a news release about the tour. This will be Judd's first solo tour since the death of her mother Naomi in April 2022. "The fans held me up and supported me through that season of change in 1992, and I now see 'herstory' repeating itself. This music healed me then and is healing me now. The circle of life continues…" she said in the release. Tickets start at $59.50. acllive.com.

Doja Cat at Moody Center

When the reigning queen of hip-pop R&B played ACL Fest in 2021, she delivered a truly astonishing performance. She popped, she locked, she hair-whipped, she bounced, she ruled the stage while shifting her vocals from sultry seductress to vulnerable lover to impossibly fierce rhyme-slinger without losing a beat. Even in a festival set she engaged in detailed world-building and with the full resources of the Moody's state of the art facility, we expect she'll immerse the audience in a full fantasy. Travis Scott at Moody Center

Travis Scott will be in town to support his new album "Utopia," which shot to the top of the Billboard Charts (while racking upmiddling reviews) as soon as it was released this summer. The date is one of two Texas stops on the tour — he plays Dallas on Oct. 17 — and will mark the rapper's first full concerts in the state sincea crowd crush at his 2021 Astroworld festival in Houstonleft 10 people dead and many more injured.A Houston grand jury decided not to indict Scott on criminal charges related to the event in late June. Scott took a six-month break following the Astroworld tragedy. While he's done a few one-off dates and festival appearances stateside, most of his touring for the last two years has been overseas. $2 from every ticket sold on this tour will go to Scott'sCactus Jack Foundation, which benefits underprivileged youths in Houston. Girl in a Coma at Mohawk outdoor

A chance meeting with Joan Jett in 2007 catapulted the heavy rocking San Antonio trio onto an international stage when lead singer Nina Diaz was still a teenager. The band, founded by Diaz's sister Phanie and her best friend Jenn Alva, signed to Jett's Blackheart Records label and landed a gig opening for British mopester Morrissey, whose song "Girlfriend in a Coma" inspired their name. After several years of heavy touring and high profile opening spots, the band took a break in 2014. Since then, Nina Diaz has been focused on her solo career while Phanie Diaz and Alva have been playing with their punk band Fea. The group did a goodbye show in their hometown in 2018, but they are reuniting for a run of "final curtain" shows in Austin, San Antonio and Houston $25. resoundpresents.com

Sept. 16-17: Pecan Street Festival

Celebrating its 48th year in 2023, the free event that takes over Sixth Street is not only the largest arts and crafts festival in Central Texas, it’s one of the oldest events of its kind in the country. In addition to art vendors and street food, the festival operates multiple stages featuring live music from top local and regional acts.pecanstreetfestival.org

Sept. 19: HAAM Day at venues around Austin

Since 2005, the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians has helped nearly 6,700 musicians access health care services ranging from primary care to dental, vision, hearing and mental health support. Musicians will play at nontraditional venues across the city to raise money and awareness about the nonprofit’s mission. Catch an early morning serenade from R&B singer Mélat at 6 a.m. at the Lake Austin HEB or sleep in and shop to the sounds of Shinyribs in the same store at 9 a.m. Boogie woogie with Marcia Ball at the Willie Nelson statue at 10 a.m. or sip a smoothie to the sounds of Elijah Zane at Juiceland (Barton Springs) at noon. Music lovers can donate to HAAM at any of the events or online at p2p.onecause.com/haamday. More info and full lineup at myhaam.org.

Sept. 21-24: Bastrop Music Festival

Tunes will spill into the street from 10 Bastrop businesses as the small community east of Austin hosts its second annual music fest. This year’s lineup includes rockabilly queen Rosie Flores, Kelsey Wilson’s Sir Woman, folk rockers Beat Root Revival, Bastrop’s favorite sons the Peterson Brothers and many more. Participating venues include 602 Brewing Company, The Bearded Baking Company and Old Town Restaurant and Bar. Weekend wristbands are $45. bastropmusicfestival.com.

Oct. 6-8 and 13-15: Austin City Limits Music Festival at Zilker Park

The massive multi-stage blowout draws roughly 75,000 daily to the crown jewel of Austin’s parks system. This year’s lineup features Kendrick Lamar, Foo Fighters, Shania Twain, Mumford & Sons, Kali Uchis and many more. The bad news? Three-day passes for both weekends as well as single-day tickets for Friday and Saturday for weekend one and Saturday of weekend two are sold out. The good news? You can join a waitlist for any of these tickets. Also, at press time there were a fair amount of verified three-day passes for both weekends on Ticketmaster’s official exchange priced below the festival’s Tier 3 pricing of $375. As for the single-day tickets, there are plenty of resale tickets available online for the sold-out days, but at publication time, you were not going to beat the $170 daily rate. Children under 8 are free with a paying adult. aclfestival.com.

Oct. 20-21: F1 Music with Queen + Adam Lambert, the Killers

Like fast cars and glam rock? British rock titans Queen will take the big stage at the Circuit of Americas on Saturday, Oct. 21, during the Formula 1 Lenovo United States Grand Prix. American rocker Adam Lambert, who has been performing with Queen since 2011, will lead singalongs like "We Will Rock You," "Another One Bites the Dust," "Bohemian Rhapsody" and, of course, "We Are the Champions" at the racetrack jam. On Friday night of F1 weekend, Las Vegas rockers the Killers will play at the racetrack. Again, these concerts are for (deep-pocketed) folks who are really into fast cars. A general admission three-day F1 pass that includes both concerts and Sunday’s race will set you back $475. A two-day pass that includes the Queen concert and the race is $425. If you are extra fancy, there are ticket upgrades that will get you a closer vantage point for the concerts. More information and tickets at circuitoftheamericas.com

Oct. 26-29: Levitation with Flying Lotus, BADBADNOTGOOD, more

Elevate your senses and set your imagination free as Austin’s annual celebration of mind-opening psychedelic sounds returns for its biggest showing in years. While much of this year’s event is still anchored in the Red River Cultural District, it’s possible to log four days of top-notch festing without setting foot in downtown Austin.

The four-day event kicks off on Thursday with a slate of nine shows that includes singer-songwriter Ty Segall and his Freedom Band headlining Stubb’s BBQ, post-hardcore outfit Unwound at the Far Out Lounge in South Austin, Aussie rockers the Church at Elysium and electronic artist Oneohtrix Point Never mixing it up at Southeast Austin dance music outpost Concourse project.

Friday’s shows include Alan Palomo of Neon Indian at Empire, ‘90s alt-rockers Blonde Redhead at Mohawk and Brainfeeder founder Flying Lotus at Concourse Project. Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Black Angels at Far Out, Speedy Ortiz at the Parish, Amyl and the Sniffers at Stubb’s and Durand Jones at the Mohawk are among your Saturday options, and fest closers include BADBADNOTGOOD at Far Out, Death from Above 1979 at Mohawk and Beach Fossils at Stubb’s. $395 four-day pass; $18-$55 for individual shows. See levitation.fm for detailed schedule and tickets.

Nov. 10-12: Seismic Dance Event at Concourse Project

Austin’s premiere dance music festival returns to Southeast Austin with a lineup that mixes underground innovators with some of the genre's biggest stars. Mainstream electronic music hitmaker deadmau5 and super producer Chris Lake from Black Book Records lead the roster alongside Kaskade, who will put his pop collabs on the shelf for a "Redux" set exploring the underground house he mines in his series of "Redux" EPs. Area10 label head MK will be in the house and German producers Boys Noize and Loco Dice will bring international flavor to a lineup featuring over two dozen artists with more additions on the way. $249 3-day pass; $119 single-day. seismicdanceevent.com
