When the end came Saturday night in City Hospital he was registered simply James; F. Monahan, 62, resident of Belmont Home for the indigent. Police said it was generally that Monahan was "Boston Billy Williams." He also was known in the past as "Billy Ward." Owned Estates Time was when he was affluent, with estates at Palm Beach, and Long Island, N. and an apartment on Park avenue, New York. His flawless attire and courtly manner permitted him to mingle unchallenged with the elite.

When he relieved the Jesse Livermores of $100,000 in gems at their Long Island estate, Mr. Livermore was furious, but his wife remarked: "Well, you've got to admit he was charming." The "gentleman jewel thief" and -his colleagues drove authorities to desperation early in the century as they looted some 150 palatial homes in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut of jewels with an insured value of $4.5 million. Arrested in 1927 This figure was set by Charles Sheritan of the William J. Burns International Detective Agency, who arrested Monahan in 1927 was visiting a girl in Connecticut. In attempting to escape the Connecticut arrest, Monahan was shot in the hip and he reportedly carried the slug the balance of his life.

He was sentenced to 50 years' imprisonment, spending 29 years in New York's Sing and Dannemora Penitentiaries. Then he served a two-year term in Massachusetts on an his old car theft conviction. Monahan once explained his weakness for jewels saying: in "I was born April 22, 1898.
